Понятие «ночной цикл дыхания» обозначает одновременно несколько процессов, которые почти не имеют непосредственного отношения к дыханию. Ночью протекает темная фаза фотосинтеза, при которой происходит синтез сахаров. Это единственная фаза фотосинтеза, которая осуществляется не только днем. За ночь к листьям по клеткам проводящей системы поступают новые запасы воды: днем световая фаза фотосинтеза требует воды и тратит ее, также в тепле и на свету вода быстро испаряется. Ночью на поверхности листьев открываются устьица, происходит газообмен между межклеточным пространством листа и окружающей атмосферой. Дыхание, которое свойственно всем живым клеткам, – процесс, происходящий постоянно, но с наружной атмосферой межклеточное пространство обменивается газами, только когда устьица открыты, то есть, например, по ночам. Все это приводит к тому, что к утру в листьях и в воздухе вокруг них стабилизируется новый баланс процессов и количества веществ.
