He stood up abruptly and then knelt down on the ground by the side of the thing unseen (он резко встал и затем снова опустился на колени на землю сбоку от невидимого существа). There was a pushing and shuffling (началась толкотня, ерзанье; shuffle — куча, груда /в беспорядке сваленных предметов/; перетасовка; ерзанье), a sound of heavy feet as fresh people turned up to increase the pressure of the crowd (послышался звук тяжелых шагов; новые люди подходили и усиливали давление толпы; to turn up — показаться, появиться). People now were coming out of the houses (теперь из домов выходили люди). The doors of the “Jolly Cricketers” stood suddenly wide open (двери «Веселых игроков в крикет» внезапно распахнулись). Very little was said (говорили очень мало).

“Don’t you leave go of en,” cried the big navvy, holding a blood-stained spade; “he’s shamming.”
“He’s not shamming,” said the doctor, cautiously raising his knee; “and I’ll hold him.” His face was bruised and already going red; he spoke thickly because of a bleeding lip. He released one hand and seemed to be feeling at the face. “The mouth’s all wet,” he said. And then, “Good God!”
He stood up abruptly and then knelt down on the ground by the side of the thing unseen. There was a pushing and shuffling, a sound of heavy feet as fresh people turned up to increase the pressure of the crowd. People now were coming out of the houses. The doors of the “Jolly Cricketers” stood suddenly wide open. Very little was said.
“He’s not breathing (он не дышит),” he said, and then, “I can’t feel his heart (сердце не бьется). His side — ugh (бок у него… ох)!”
Suddenly an old woman, peering under the arm of the big navvy, screamed sharply (вдруг какая-то старуха, выглядывавшая из-под руки рослого землекопа, резко вскрикнула).
“Looky there (глядите; looky = look)!” she said, and thrust out a wrinkled finger (сказала она и вытянула морщинистый палец).
And looking where she pointed, everyone saw (посмотрев, куда она указала, все увидели), faint and transparent as though it was made of glass (бледный, прозрачный, словно из стекла), so that veins and arteries and bones and nerves could be distinguished (такой, что можно было разглядеть вены, артерии, кости и нервы; to distinguish — различить; разглядеть, рассмотреть), the outline of a hand, a hand limp and prone (контур руки, безвольно лежавшей на земле; prone — лежащийничком, распростертый). It grew clouded and opaque even as they stared (она мутнела, становилась непрозрачной прямо у них на глазах: «как раз когда они изумленно смотрели»).
“Hullo (ого)!” cried the constable (воскликнул констебль). “Here’s his feet a-showing (а вот его ноги показываются)!”

And so, slowly, beginning at his hands and feet (и так, медленно, начиная с его рук и ног) and creeping along his limbs to the vital centres of his body (расползаясь по всем членам до жизненных центров тела), that strange change continued (продолжалось это странное изменение). It was like the slow spreading of a poison (это было похоже на медленное распространение яда). First came the little white nerves (первыми показались тонкие белые нервы), a hazy grey sketch of a limb (/образуя/ смутный серый контур каждой конечности; sketch — эскиз, набросок; очертание, контур), then the glassy bones and intricate arteries (затем прозрачные, как стекло, кости и сеть артерий; intricate — перепутанный; сложный), then the flesh and skin (потом мышцы и кожа; flesh — тело, плоть), first a faint fogginess (сначала в виде легкой туманности), and then growing rapidly dense and opaque (а затем быстро становясь плотными и непрозрачными). Presently they could see his crushed chest and his shoulders (вскоре можно было видеть его разбитую грудь и его плечи), and the dim outline of his drawn and battered features (и неясный абрис перекошенного, разбитого лица; drawn — выпотрошенный/оптице/; искаженный, искривленный).
When at last the crowd made way for Kemp to stand erect (когда наконец толпа расступилась и Кемп встал прямо), there lay, naked and pitiful on the ground (то перед ними на земле лежало голое, жалкое), the bruised and broken body of a young man about thirty (избитое, изувеченное тело человека лет тридцати). His hair and brow were white — not grey with age (его волосы и брови были белыми — не седыми от возраста), but white with the whiteness of albinism (а белыми, как у альбиносов) — and his eyes were like garnets (а глаза — /красные/ как гранаты; garnet — геол. гранат). His hands were clenched (руки его были сжаты /в кулаки/), his eyes wide open (глаза широко открыты), and his expression was one of anger and dismay (а на лице застыло выражение гнева и смятения).

“Cover his face (накройте ему лицо)!” said a man. “For Gawd’s sake, cover that face (ради Бога, накройте; for Gawd’s sake = for God’s sake)!” and three little children, pushing forward through the crowd (и троих ребятишек, протолкнувшихся через толпу), were suddenly twisted round and sent packing off again (резко развернули и снова выпроводили; to send off — отсылать/письмо/; прогонять; to pack off — выпроваживать, прогонять).
Someone brought a sheet from the “Jolly Cricketers (кто-то принес простыню из «Веселых игроков в крикет»),” and having covered him, they carried him into that house (и, накрыв Гриффина, его внесли в дом). And there it was, on a shabby bed in a tawdry, ill-lighted bedroom (и там, на жалкой кровати в убогой, плохо освещенной спальне; tawdry — мишурный, кричаще безвкусный), surrounded by a crowd of ignorant and excited people (окруженный толпой невежественных, возбужденных людей), broken and wounded, betrayed and unpitied (избитый и израненный, преданный и не вызывающий жалости), that Griffin, the first of all men to make himself invisible (Гриффин, первый из людей, сделавший себя невидимым), Griffin, the most gifted physicist the world has ever seen (Гриффин, самый одаренный физик, которого когда-либо видел свет; gift — подарок; способность, дарование; дар, талант), ended in infinite disaster his strange and terrible career (окончил безмерным несчастьем свой странный и ужасный путь; career — карьера, успех; занятие, профессия).

The Epilogue (эпилог)
So ends the story of the strange and evil experiments of the Invisible Man (так кончается рассказ о необыкновенных и пагубных экспериментах Невидимки). And if you would learn more of him (а если вы хотите узнать о нем больше) you must go to a little inn near Port Stowe and talk to the landlord (вам нужно отправиться в маленький трактир возле Порт-Стоу и поговорить с хозяином). The sign of the inn is an empty board save for a hat and boots (вывеска трактира — пустая доска, на которой /изображены/ только шляпа и башмаки), and the name is the title of this story (а название /трактира/ такое же, как у этой книги). The landlord is a short and corpulent little man (хозяин — низкий полный человечек) with a nose of cylindrical proportions, wiry hair (с длинным носом, жесткими волосами; wiry — похожий на проволоку; жесткий /о волосах, шерсти, траве/), and a sporadic rosiness of visage (и лицом в красных пятнах). Drink generously, and he will tell you generously of all the things (выпейте побольше, и он подробно расскажет вам обо всем; generously — благородно; обильно, щедро) that happened to him after that time (что случилось с ним после того времени /описанных выше событий/), and of how the lawyers tried to do him out of the treasure found upon him (и о том, как юристы пытались отобрать у него найденные при нем деньги; treasure — сокровище; богатство, деньги).
